I posted a little Q&A on Instagram Stories on Friday and received several similar type questions asking what I like about Houston, if I like living in Texas, and how Houston compares to DC. While I definitely miss DC so much, I’m really loving getting to know Houston better too! Michael and I have been in Houston for four months now, which is crazy!

So today I thought I’d share 5 things I’m loving about living in Houston … so far!

5 Things I Love About Houston, TX

The ease of running errands.

This might sound silly, but it tops my list of favorite things about Houston vs DC – I mean, we have a CAR! Michael and I went almost 5 years in DC without one, so being able to easily hop over to the grocery store or to Target or to SoulCycle is such a treat. Don’t get me wrong, I miss walking everywhere, but I don’t miss schlepping around town with all of my belongings to run a “quick” errand.

And contrary to a lot of preconceived notions about Houston, we actually live within 10 minutes of essentially everything we need. We live inside the first loop – near downtown. We never really have to get on the interstates or highways, which are what give Houston a bad rap for terrible traffic.

Southern hospitality.

Everyone is SO nice in the South. It’s something I missed often while living in DC. Everyone is nice in Houston, like, EVERYONE. Almost to the point where I was skeptical at first, like what did the kind person on the street saying hello to me REALLY want?! ha

It’s a stereotype that’s definitely true, southerners are just the nicest. 🙂

The amazing food and restaurant scene!

Houston is arguably one of the most diverse cities in the U.S. (it’s the 4th biggest city in the U.S.). With that comes an amazing food and restaurant scene! Don’t be fooled, Houston has WAY more to offer than Tex-Mex and BBQ. We’ve had amazing sushi, Vietnamese, Viet-cajun, and Indian meals, and we have a running list of restaurants that I can’t wait to try out!

The HOT weather.

I LIVE for hot weather! I absolutely hated the fact that it was still chilly in DC in March, April, May, and even June. I love the warm spring weather here in Houston, and I actually don’t even mind the 100 degree summer days (so far). I’ll take the heat over the cold any day!

Neighborhood vibes in a big city.

Like I mentioned, Houston is the 4th largest city in the U.S., but it doesn’t feel like it at all. Sure, there’s a downtown, but it’s not like most big-city downtowns. Houston is divided into pockets of neighborhoods that honestly make it feel like any other southern town, not a big city. I like the neighborhood feels. It’s calmer and more quaint. Less hustle and bustle.

Moving to Houston was my 4th big move to a new city. While I definitely miss DC, I know from my past experiences that it takes me about a year to really get into a groove and fall in love with a new city. I’m excited to keep exploring and getting to know Houston!
