I’ve been a morning person for quite some time now. Even back in law school, I was the one at the library right when it opened, but never the one pulling all nighters. I’ve come to absolutely love my mornings. I can easily say they’re my favorite part of the day. There’s something really satisfying about having so much accomplished before 8:00 am. I know this doesn’t ring true with everyone so today I thought I’d share 3 easy steps that can hopefully help you to become a morning person too!
My Morning Routine
To give you an idea of what my typical weekday morning looks like, my alarm goes off at 5:00 am every morning. I try my very best to get at least 6 hours of sleep each night on weeknights, 7 would be amazing, and 8 is a dream (this never happens). The first thing I do is take a shower. It helps to wake me up and get me going for the day.
After a quick shower, I make breakfast and coffee. I recently read a great article (How to make a good espresso Shot – 5 Golden Tips) which taught me how to make my own coffee. I make my own coffee every morning as it helps me prepare for the day ahead. Coffee is a huge part of my morning routine!! Right now I’m on a toast and berries kick, but this changes every so often. I use my mornings as the main time for blog work during the week. I typically work on the blog and everything that goes along with it until around 7:30 am. At this point I’ll do a few little tasks around my apartment (think laundry, cleaning up etc.) and then I get ready for work. I try to be out of my door and heading to the metro by 8:30 at the latest.
3 Steps to Become a Morning Person
A Morning Person Makes a To-Do List the Night Before
I’m a huge list person. I rely on making a list the night (or even day) before for the tasks that I need to accomplish the next morning. That way, I know what I need to check off of my to-do list before leaving my apartment the next day. Making a list also sets the stage for a smoother morning. When I know exactly what I need to be doing, the morning seems more manageable, and I wake up calmer knowing exactly what tasks are at hand.
A Morning Person Showers Immediately Upon Waking Up
Like I mentioned above, I shower immediately upon waking up. Showering gives me a burst of energy and at the same time, eases me into the morning. It’s also nice to have that out of the way so I don’t have to deal with it later when I need to be getting ready to head out the door.
Find One Thing that You Really Enjoy About Your Morning Routine
I really do love my mornings. I love that it’s quiet. I love that no one is awake to bother me (no emails coming in, no texts etc.) I love my morning coffee. I just generally love the quietness that early morning brings. The morning also sets the tone for my day. Taking the time to enjoy the morning and take advantage of the time to get work done really starts the day on a positive note.
Pick something about your morning routine that you really enjoy. Whether that’s a short walk around the block while it’s still quiet out, a morning coffee, being able to check a thing or two off of your to do list … Just pick one thing that you really look forward to doing each morning, it will help you to really enjoy your mornings!
A Morning Person’s Bonus Tip
I’m not the best example of getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep, but I find that if I can get 6 hours of sleep each night, that seems to work for me. Find the amount of sleep that you need to function on all cylinders. I recently started using the Bedtime function on my iPhone as my alarm, which shows you exactly how many hours you’re getting depending on what time you tell it you’re going to sleep and what time you set your alarm for in the morning. It was definitely an eye opener when I started using it. Another thing I really like about the function is the sound that the alarm makes … it’s soothing and gradually increases in loudness instead of jolting you out bed. You’ll enjoy your mornings even more if you’re well rested!
