Birmingham Eats

BirminghamI spent a good chunk of time in Birmingham, Alabama. I lived there for six years prior to moving to D.C.  Some of my best friends still live there, and of course, I have all of my favorite go-to restaurants around town.  The gist of our weekend in town consisted of drinking and eating (a lot!) with friends.  It was so great to be back and spend time with everyone!

When we arrived in Birmingham on Friday night, we went straight to Chez Fon Fon for dinner.  In my opinion, they have the absolute best burger in town!  Pair that with their coconut cake, and you can’t go wrong.  I was obviously too excited to see all of our friends and so excited about the burger that I didn’t manage to take any photos.  #fail

On Saturday we started the day at one of our favorite coffee spots, Octane.  I’m obsessed with their macchiato.  The biscuits were outstanding.  We went with the egg + cheese and the butter + jam biscuits and a blueberry muffin.  Yum!Octane

We spent the afternoon in Avondale, a neighborhood in Birmingham.  We hit up Post Office Pies for lunch followed by Avondale Brewery and then 41st Street Pub where you HAVE to get a moscow mule – I’ve yet to find somewhere that does a better mule.

All weekend I was looking forward to Sunday brunch.  One of my favorite spots in Birmingham is Trattoria Centrale.  They have the BEST french toast.  They don’t start serving brunch until 11AM, but the key is to get there early, sit outside with a cup of coffee, and as soon as the line starts forming inside, hop in it because it can get super long as the morning goes on!  Michael and I’s go to order is french toast + breakfast pizza + free squeezed OJ + coffee.  AMAZE.

Before we hopped on our flight back to D.C. we had to make one more pitstop, Steel City Pops.  This pop shop is out of this world.  My favorites are coconut, buttermilk (I know it sounds weird, but just go with it), and passion fruit.

I could go on and on about Birmingham, especially its food scene.  There are so many places to hit up that we couldn’t fit all of our favorites in over one weekend.  If you need any more suggestions on places to go, I’m happy to share!

Have a great day, and as always, thanks so much for stopping by!

My parents both grew up in Birmingham (Bush Hills/BSU area), so when we would visit relatives we would eat at places that are no longer there. There was a bakery called Marsh’s that had the best coconut cake in the world, so I look forward to trying Chez Fon Fon’s cake the next time I am there. All of these restaurants look great. Thanks for sharing.

I bet Marsh’s cake was great! It’s too bad those places are closed now. Chez Fon Fon is amazing, such a great atmosphere and wonderful food. If you have a chance to try the coconut cake, I’d love to know what you think!
