It’s Coming … How to Prep for the Biggest Sale of the Year! Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Nordstrom-Anniversary-Sale-Prep | Cobalt Chronicles | Washington, DC | Fashion Blogger

I know the title of this post sounds dramatic, but the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale really is one of the best sales of the year!  But this year, I’m approaching it a little bit differently than in year’s past.

You know the saying, you don’t know until you know? Well I’ve recently been diving more into the world of “fast fashion” and consumerism in the fashion industry, and as a blogger/influencer (I cringe a bit at that phrase), I don’t want to be constantly promoting and supporting companies that only care about the bottomline. With the little bit of knowledge I have on the topic, I now know that the true cost of slashing prices on clothing items and the constant pushing by big brands and bloggers/influencers alike comes at a high price. I’ll dive more into this in a future post, and I ask that you give me a bit of grace as I’m maneuvering through this new found knowledge. But what I do know, and how this pertains to this year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, is that I want to focus on highlighting quality pieces by sustainable brands and manufacturers during this year’s sale.

I’m not going to be pushing you to purchase every $20 cardigan that’s part of the sale. Instead, I hope to encourage you to really examine your closet, see what holes are there for the upcoming fall season, and make a plan to fill those holes with quality pieces that will last for more than one season and that are made by reputable brands. 🙂

With that said, I do think the sale is worth shopping as Nordstrom releases new fall items at discounted rates. There are always good, quality items included in the sale. Just focus on what you need and try not to get caught up in the frenzy of purchasing items just because they’re on sale.

It’s the best time to pick up staples that will carry you trough fall and winter at a fraction of the price.  The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale features brand new items at sale prices.  This is the time to be thinking about what you need to add to your closet for fall.

Early Access starts on July 12th!

All the hype happens because every single item that is on sale is brand new.  During the Anniversary Sale, Nordstrom debuts their fall pieces at sale prices, but only for a short period of time – then a few weeks later, everything goes back to normal, full price.  And it’s true, every year, items do sell out pretty quickly.

To prepare for the sale, you’ll want to take note of the dates below.  Keep in mind that items definitely sell out and remember that Nordstrom always offers FREE shipping and FREE returns! Take advantage of this generous return policy and purchase items that will fill the gaps in your fall wardrobe. And if the items don’t work for you, actually return the items. Don’t keep things you won’t wear on repeat.

TIP: If you’re a Nordstrom credit card holder, you get to shop one whole week earlier than the general public.  I’ve had the card for 2 years now, and I can honestly say it is worth signing up!  I know what you’re thinking, you don’t need another credit card.  All you have to do is be a Nordstrom credit card holder to access the sale early.  You don’t have to use it any other time of the year except for during the one week of early access.  And if you order online, you don’t even have to put your sale purchases on the card (this worked for me last year).  I’d actually recommend that the early access time period is the ONLY time you use it (so many other good credit cards out there for all of your other purchases!).

I wanted to give you a heads up about the credit card and early access today so you have plenty of time to sign up and receive the card prior to the sale if that’s something you’re interested in – early access opens on July 12th!

See below for my strategy on shopping the sale this year!

  • Thursday, July 12th – Early Access – If you are a Nordstrom credit card holder, you can access the sale early!
  • Thursday, July 18th – Last day for Early Access!
  • Friday, July 19th – The sale opens up to EVERYONE!
  • Sunday, August 4th – Last day of the sale.  Prices go back to full price the next day!

I know it seems like the sale lasts for a while, and although it does, popular items do sell out quickly.

Since I now live in a warmer climate (hi, Houston), my strategy is a bit different since fall weather is pretty far off.  This year I’m looking for workout clothes, a couple of new cardigans, and tops to wear with jeans.  With my new strategy this year to support sustainable clothing brands, I’ll be looking to Reformation and Eileen Fisher for clothing, Spiritual Gangster and Girlfriend Collective for workout clothes, and Veja for a fun pair of fall sneakers!

I generally like to go for more classic, closet staples.

You can check out a mini preview of the sale in Nordstrom’s catalog here!

For your convenience, I created a Nordstrom Anniversary Sale tab at the top of the page where all of my Nordstrom Sale posts and picks from the sale will be housed!  You can check it out leading up to the sale and throughout the sale – I’ll be updating picks with what’s still in stock throughout the sale and doing all the digging for you so you don’t have to!

Thanks for the reminder! Your post last year about the Nordstrom sale was super helpful (and actually how I was introduced to Nordstrom), so thank you.

Oh yay! I’m so glad you found it (and last year’s post) helpful! It really is my favorite sale of the year (better thank Black Friday, IMO!) so I’m glad others enjoy it too!
