I’m excited to share something near and dear to my heart with you today! Something a little different than the usual posts you see here on Cobalt Chronicles. I’m beyond excited to be partnering with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital this summer to promote the KTBS3/St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway. Keep reading to see how you can get involved, support a great cause, and potentially win a house!

The Dream Home Giveaways Started in My Hometown!

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a hospital dedicated to treating and defeating childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. At St. Jude, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital executes numerous fundraisers throughout the year and across the country to not only support its families but also to support continued research into the cause of childhood cancers and to ultimately develop treatments and cures.

If you’re not familiar with the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaways, it’s one of the largest single-event fundraisers for St. Jude nationwide and has raised more than $400 million to date. And fun fact, the Dream Home Giveaways started in my hometown!

The KTBS3/St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway was created in 1991 by Dr. Donald Mack, a retired pediatric physician from Shreveport, Louisiana. Dr. Mack relied on St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to treat young patients with catastrophic diseases and was the first doctor to send an out-of-state patient to St. Jude.

The first KTBS3/St. Jude Dream Home was constructed in Shreveport, Louisiana, and raised $160,000 for the hospital. Since that first giveaway, the KTBS 3/St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway in Shreveport has become an annual fundraiser, raising more than $33 million for the hospital.

Growing up in Shreveport, the KTBS3/St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway was, and still is, an annual event that’s a huge part of our community. It’s always exciting to see the house being built on the news and then the excitement of who’s actually going to win the giveaway – who’s going to win a house?!

Floor Signing Event

Last month, I had the opportunity to attend one of the events leading up to the Giveaway, the Floor Signing event. At the Floor Signing event, a few St. Jude patients and their families, along with representatives of sponsors for this year’s home all were able to sign the slab and leave a message for the soon-to-be new homeowners prior to the permanent floors being laid.

It was really moving to see all of the people involved with supporting the house and supporting the fundraiser. Even more moving was hearing from a mom of one of the patients at St. Jude about how St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital supported her and her family when her daughter was receiving treatment for her disease. Thankfully her daughter is in remission now, thanks to St. Jude.
