As I’ve gotten older, and especially this past year, I’ve taken an extra interest in taking care of my skin.  I want to kick myself for all those days spent in the sun, sans sunscreen.  I’ve been trying a lot of different beauty products lately, and I have to say that I’m really loving Beautycounter’s products!  Beauty counter’s products are completely free of harmful ingredients (that other countries have outlawed, but the Food & Drug Administration still allows in our cosmetics) while still being effective!

I’m really into hydrating, firming, and reducing the appearance of fine lines on my face these days so my favorite products are the Rejuvenating Day Cream, the Rejuvenating Eye Cream, and the Rejuvenating Radiance Serum!  I thought it would be fun to introduce y’all to one of my good friends who is very passionate about the Beautycounter products and Beautycounter’s mission.  So without further ado, here are a few questions I asked my friend Erin, who started out as a Beautycounter customer and now has taken her love for the products even further and is now a Beautycounter consultant (you can find her here!).

Q: Give us a brief description & background of Beautycounter. 

A: Gregg Renfrew, the CEO and a mother of 3 children founded Beautycounter in 2013 after she started investigating the ingredients in her personal care products in which she was putting on herself and her children. She found out the majority of these ingredients were toxic and harmful to herself and her family’s health, therefore she started Beautycounter.

The FDA allows companies to use chemicals known to be extremely harmful in the products we put on our bodies and our children’s bodies every single day and to make their own judgements about safety. What’s even more disturbing is that the US has not passed a federal law to regulate the safety of our ingredients in cosmetics since 1938! In Europe, over 1,400 ingredients have been banned from personal care items, and in the US we have only banned 11. Beautycounter’s mission is simply to get safer products into the hands of families everywhere. Beautycounter has a “Never List” which lists over 1,500 different ingredients which may be harmful or questionable to our human health and they will never be used in any of our products. Using the best available data, we screen every potential ingredient, considering it both individually and within a mixture of chemicals, as it would be in a final product and all of our product’s ingredients are listed on our packaging and online.

Q: What drew you to Beautycounter?

A: I’ll never forget when I was first introduced to Beautycounter. I was at the beach with my sister and some of her friends and we were having typical girl conversations about marriage, babies and clothes. I shared my story about my struggle to not only get pregnant, but stay pregnant without losing the baby. I’ve always been a health conscious person and was paying very close attention to what I was putting in my body through my diet, but I wasn’t aware of what I was putting on my body. Our skin is our largest organ and what we put on our bodies day after day can have debilitating long term effects. That’s when one of the girls told me about Beautycounter. We talked about how a lot of the ingredients in our makeup and skin care products contain hormone disruptors like BPA, parabens and phthalates which can mimic estrogen and throw off the functions of our endocrine systems. Immediately I was intrigued and told her I had to get my hands on this stuff. One month later, I got pregnant and now I have a beautiful baby boy.

Q: What made you want to become a part of the Beautycounter team?

A: It was really a win win for me to join the Beautycounter team. This business allows me to be a stay at home mom while making an income for my family and meeting other fabulous women in my city who share the same passion and interests as me.

Q: What are your top 5 favorite Beautycounter products?

A: 1) The cleansing balm is incredible! It’s basically a 3-in-1 product which can be used as a makeup remover, an overnight mask and a cleanser. 2) One of my other obsessions are our Lustro face oils. Many people question putting oil on their faces, because they believe it will make their skin oily or even breakout. These Lustro oils are made from a unique blend of plant oils. There are 3 different oils to choose from the balancing, soothing, & hydrating. These oils can be used in the morning or evening or even both. I’ve included the balancing oil into my nighttime routine and I’ll combine with my night cream and my skin feels and smells so fresh! 3) Our tint skin foundation is a makeup must! This stuff is a miracle worker and hides imperfections with a flawless look. The foundation contains sodium hyaluronate, which is a natural moisturizing agent to help minimize fine lines. The foundation comes in 8 different shades.  Available here.

4) The lip sheer will come in handy once the weather gets cool and starts drying out our skin. Almost all lipsticks in the cosmetic industry contain animal fats and lead, a major neurotoxin. When I learned how harmful our lipsticks can be, I immediately switched over to the Beautycounter lip sheer. The sheers have a moisturizing property unlike other lipsticks which can often times dry out your lips causing them to have a cracked or wrinkled appearance. 5) Doesn’t the combination citrus mimosa sound so incredible? This is one of Beautycounter’s classic scents and it can be found in the hydrating body lotion. Some of the ingredients include a moisturizing blend of marula, mongongo, and safflower seed oils, plus shea and jojoba butters. This stuff sits right by my shower and I use it almost twice a day.
