If you read this post or follow along on Instagram Stories, you saw that Michael and I are moving to Houston! We’re moving at the end of the month. So last week, we flew to Houston to find a place to live.

House Hunting in Houston

Michael spent the week at work (his new job is based in Houston), while I was in charge of bopping around the city to view potential properties. As you might know, currently, we don’t own a car. Everything is walkable or easily accessible by public transportation in DC. Not the case in Houston. Mazda graciously lent me a new Mazda6 for the week to make getting around town easier and more efficient than having to Uber back and forth to every house showing!

We were mainly looking in the Montrose, Upper Kirby and Heights neighborhoods. I was driving back and forth between showings all day for three days straight.

Mazda6 Review

A couple of things I loved about the Mazda6 … The safety features and the in-windshield display. I appreciate that the Mazda6 has built in sensors on the front and rear end of the car that beep to notify you anytime you’re too close to another object. Another feature that I love, and mentioned in this post with Mazda as well, is the in-windshield display. When you’re driving, the speed limit is displayed in the windshield right above the dash board along with your actual speed. This feature was so incredibly helpful being in a new city where I wasn’t familiar with the roads or any of the speed limits.

All in all I looked at ten houses covering all three neighborhoods. We’re opting to rent for the time being until we have time to get a handle on what neighborhood we really want to be in. Neither Michael nor I have spent much time in Houston so we want to feel out the areas before we make any big commitments.

Where We Ended Up

We ended up finding a spot in the Heights that we love! It has charming original details along with modern upgrades like a newly renovated kitchen. One of my favorite details is that there’s a back deck along with a backyard with two separate sitting areas! Grilling out is one of the things Michael and I missed most about living in the South. We’re excited to be able to have family and friends over to enjoy the outdoor space!

The countdown is on!
