I’m excited to share the big news with you, Michael and I are moving! To Houston, Texas! Craziness. This post is an odd one to write. While I’m so incredibly excited for a new chapter and to be moving back down south, it’s also bitter sweet. I love DC, and I’m going to miss it so much! But for today’s post, I’m focusing on the positives and the excitement of our big move!

A Little Background … On Why We’re Moving to Houston!

To give you a little background, Michael and I are going on five years of living in the District of Columbia. While we absolutely love DC, there are parts of it that were starting to wear on us. As most people know, it’s a very expensive city to live in (like most large cities). We’re at the point in our lives where we’re ready to start looking to settle into a home and purchase one of our own, which isn’t a possibility in DC, at least for what we would want to buy. The alternative is to move out to the suburbs (Virginia or Maryland). That was never an option in my mind. I love DC because of the city. If we were going to be forced to live in the burbs, I’d much rather move back to the South (where we’re both from) and settle down closer to family and friends.

Around the same time that Michael and I were discussing a potential move, an opportunity came up for Michael and his career. The job opportunity is based in, you guessed it, Houston! He officially accepted the job offer over the holidays. With the holidays, our wedding, and honeymoon, it has been a whirlwind couple of months. So why not throw in a half-way-across-the-country move?! 😉

Michael already started his new job, and I’m heading to Houston this week to hopefully find us a place to live. We’ll be renting for the first little bit to get a feel for the neighborhoods and the area.

Things I’m Most Excited About

Location // I’m really excited to be closer to our families! My mom, dad, sister, and brother-in-law all live in Shreveport, LA, which is a 4ish hour drive from Houston, and Michael’s family lives in Baton Rouge, LA, which is also a 4ish hour drive from Houston. I’m so looking forward to being able to spend more time with our family and close friends.

Food // Along with the people, I’m so excited for the food! Crawfish and Tex-Mex in particular! I’m also looking forward to being within driving distance of LSU games – Both Michael and I’s families regularly attend the games each fall. I’m excited to make a few games this football season without having to fly!

Slow Living // While I realize Houston is a large city (the 4th largest in the U.S., actually!), I’m looking forward to a slower lifestyle that’s just part of living in the South. DC, like NYC, has a go, go, go mentality, which is really energizing, but I’m looking forward to slowing down a bit!

When We’re Moving …

Like I mentioned above, Michael and I are heading to Houston this week to find a place to live. We’re planning on moving at the end of this month. I’m hoping we’ll be settled in our new spot by the first week of March!

I haven’t spent much time in Houston, so I’m here for all the recs! Email me, leave a comment below, or DM me on Instagram! Of course I’ll be sharing more details on our move and our new city over the next few weeks/months. Lots of exciting things on the horizon!

Welcome to Houston! I live On the Southeast side in Clear Lake City-like 10 minutes from NASA. I’ve lived here my whole life, 58 years, so I might be able to help if you are thinking of living I-45 South! ?
