What it’s Really Like to be a Beautycounter Consultant

Beautycounter Consultant

By now, you likely know that I’m passionate about clean beauty and clean living. Beautycounter has easily become my favorite part of my blogging business to work on and to share with you! I’ve learned so much about the beauty, skincare, and personal care industry since being introduced to the brand almost 3 years ago and since joining as a consultant almost 2 years ago.

If you’re not familiar with Beautycounter, it’s a safer skincare and beauty brand with the mission of getting safer products into the hands of everyone. As a consultant, you earn commission on sales while making a difference – educating your customers and getting clean products in their hands! #winwin As a consultant, you earn a base 25% commission on all sales and can earn up to 35% commission. You also get 25% off all of your own purchases!

My backstory + why I joined as a consultant

I started becoming aware of clean beauty 3ish years ago. A friend of mine was a Beautycounter consultant and very into clean living. I decided to try out a few Beautycounter products – the first product I ever tried was the Color Pink Cream Blush, a product I still use and love today! You can check out all of my favorite Beautycounter products here! About 6 months into using the Beautycounter products, it sort of became a no-brainer for me to join as a consultant. I loved that Beautycounter had become not only a place to shop for clean products, but an educational resource for me to learn more about the clean beauty industry. I also found the 25% off discount offered to consultants intriguing. 😉

As I dove deeper into the clean beauty industry, I realized the importance of knowing what’s in the products that I’m putting on my skin on a daily basis. Before my eyes were opened, I assumed I could walk into CVS or up to the Nordstrom makeup counter, pick up a makeup product or skincare product and it would be safe for me to use. Unfortunately, this is NOT the case!

Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues (hormone disruptions, infertility, cancer, asthma, and allergies) are on the rise and have been linked to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals. In the cosmetics industry alone, the European Union has banned over 1300 chemicals from cosmetics that are known or suspected to cause cancer, genetic mutation, reproductive harm or birth defects. In comparison, the U.S. has only banned or restricted 11 chemicals from cosmetics. It’s possible to find formaldehyde, a known carcinogen that’s banned in EU-sold cosmetics, in US hair-straightening treatments and nail polish. Parabens, linked to reproductive problems, are ruled out in the EU but not the U.S., where they’re commonly found in skin and hair products. Coal tar dyes can be found in Americans’ eyeshadow, while they were banned years ago in the EU and Canada. (source)

There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market in the U.S. today. Many don’t have any safety data. This is particularly true of those used in the skin care and beauty industry. What’s worse is that the FDA (the agency that regulates cosmetics in the United States) does not have the authority to remove harmful ingredients from the products we put on our bodies and on our kids’ bodies every single day, day after day.

Beautycounter has developed The Never List, a list of over 1800 ingredients that are NEVER used in its products. Beautycounter also advocates regularly on Capitol Hill for new, stricter regulations to be implemented to regulate the personal care products industry.

Just another MLM?

If there’s one thing you take away from this post, let it be that Beautycounter is nothing like the MLMs that make your skin crawl. There are no product purchase requirements as a consultant. There’s no auto-ship for you or customers.

While we encourage customers to shop through a consultant so that they have someone to ask questions and to get guidance on shade matching and skincare products, customers aren’t forced to shop through a consultant. Beautycounter has a traditional e-commerce website where anyone can make a purchase at anytime, without shopping through a consultant. We also have several brick and mortar locations, currently, NYC, Denver, Nantucket, and Venice.

Beautycounter was named one of 50 disruptors in 2020 by CNBC and named in the top 50 of Fast Company’s most innovative companies in the world – number one in the beauty segment!

How do I join? What does it cost?

Enrollment as a consultant is as simple as clicking here! You can easily join online! The cost is normally $98, but right now Beautycounter is also offering a digital enrollment package for just $50! Beautycounter introduced this option when the pandemic hit to make it easier to join and work from home. The $50 digital enrollment fee gets you your personalized website and access to our back end tracking and training site – Behind The Counter.

The regular $98 enrollment is still available too! And comes with all of that plus a tote bag and 2 Beautycounter products!

When you join as a consultant you have the option to purchase a starter set. These are specially curated groups of products available only to new consultants at a discounted rate. You DO NOT have to purchase these sets or any products at all when joining! Some people take advantage of the discounted offer as a way to try more products themselves and have products to sample to friends and potential clients.

What’s the catch?

There’s no catch, I promise! There’s no shady business, no requirements to purchase products, no nothing. The only requirement to maintain your consultant status is to hit $1200 in business volume every six months – don’t worry, this is easy! The $1200 includes your own purchases, and nearly everyone hits this requirement with no problem. If you don’t meet that requirement, the only thing that happens is that you drop down to a customer instead of being listed as a consultant. No fees or money to pay back. That’s it! Other than that there are absolutely no requirements.

What’s the income potential?

The sky really is the limit on how much income you can make as a Beautycounter consultant. Whether you’re simply looking for a fun hobby or looking to start a full fledged business of your own, you can do either and everything in between as a consultant! You get out of it what you put in.

I included 2019’s income report stats below just so you have an idea of potential income. Keep in mind that Managing Directors are generally consultants who have been with Beautycounter for 5+ years and treat their Beautycounter business like a business, but with that said, anything is possible!

What if you don’t know anything about skincare or makeup?

I didn’t know anything about clean makeup or skincare when I joined! That’s the beauty of being a consultant, you get to learn as you go and share what you’re learning with your customers! Beautycounter offers so much training – Counter University on our backend, plus my team has an amazing Facebook group that is an invaluable resource! We also have monthly Zoom calls, and I send out informational emails to keep everyone on track! You may feel overwhelmed at first, but I promise you’ll quickly gain confidence!

How much work/time does it take?

The amazing thing about Beautycounter is that you can work on your own time! The top leaders in the company treat Beautycounter as a full-time job, but as they’re all happy to share, they do it on their own time. Most are moms on the go and busy women, like all of us, juggling a million things all at once. For me, I’d say I spend about 5-6 hours a week working on Beautycounter. You can make whatever time you have available to work on Beautycounter work for you!

I don’t want to be “salesy” … And I’m not a blogger …

Good, I don’t want you to be salesy either! No one likes that annoying person sliding into their DMs asking them if they’re interested in purchasing products from a long lost friend. I’m sure you’ve had a friend ask where you got your lipstick from or where your cute sweater is from – that’s exactly how sharing Beautycounter products works! Another plus about Beautycounter is that you can always lead with the education piece! And never put any pressure on anyone to purchase product. You can be passionate and excited about the brand and the products without being salesy.

You do not have to be a blogger to be successful as a Beautycounter consultant! The majority of Beautycounter consultants aren’t bloggers. There are plenty of ways to share Beautycounter without having a blog. If you do have a blog, that’s great too! You can use your Beautycounter links in the same way that you would use affiliate links. The biggest difference is that the commission is much more lucrative with Beautycounter … 25-35% while most other affiliate commissions range from 5-15%.
