Newton Mattress Review

I’m excited to share a full review of the Newton mattress with you! Plus a discount code below!

If you’re a new mom, you know how overwhelming the baby product world can be. There are a million options out there and knowing which items to pick for your baby can be so overwhelming. And the research can be so time consuming! From the moment I read about Newton, I knew I wanted to try out its mattress.

A Little Backstory

I hadn’t originally envisioned using a bassinet with Weldon, but since he decided to arrive earlier than planned, we ended up getting a bassinet for him to sleep in for the first few months after he came home from the NICU. When we moved to New Orleans, I was excited to set up his nursery and promptly ordered his crib and Newton mattress. We transitioned Weldon to his crib when he was around 6 months old (3 months adjusted). I was nervous about the transition as I didn’t want to mess with the pretty good nighttime sleep routine we had going, but he transitioned seamlessly to the crib and has been sleeping great on his Newton mattress! We have the Original Crib Mattress.

I know you’re likely wondering why I chose the Newton mattress and why I’m dedicating an entire blog post to it. So let’s jump into my full Newton mattress review!

Disclaimer: I had the Newton mattress on my baby registry from the moment I learned about it. When Newton reached out to see if I’d like to partner with them to review the mattress, I jumped at the chance. The mattress was gifted to me by Newton. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Why I Chose the Newton Mattress

There are several reasons as to why the Newton mattress landed at the top of my list. Before jumping into the review, I feel like I should share the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for Safe Sleep. You can read those recommendations here. For me, after our journey in the NICU, it was really important that Weldon had a breathable crib mattress. In addition to breathability, firmness was another top feature I was looking for in a crib mattress. Outside of those two things, Greenguard Gold Certification was really high on my list of priorities – it’s a feature that I look for in most of the bigger, everyday products we buy for Weldon and have in our home.

Breathability

The Newton mattress is comprised of three layers. First, the 100% Breathe-Thru Dual Layer Cover. The cover is super soft and can be slept on without a sheet. If you opt for a sheet, to maintain the breathability, Newton recommends using a breathable cotton muslin sheet that doesn’t hinder airflow. We use these sheets. They’re super soft and 100% cotton muslin. This layer zips off for easy cleaning.

The second layer, which also zips off, is made from a natural, chemical free viscose material to prevent flames from penetrating the mattress. No chemical fire retardant is used in the Newton mattress. Federal Flammability Standards requires that all crib mattresses pass rigorous burn testing. Newton complies with these safety standards without the use of fire retardant chemicals by sewing a layer of natural viscose material into this layer.

The third layer is the actual mattress. It’s made of 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer. Unlike foam and latex, it is completely safe, non-toxic, and hypoallergenic. The mattress does not include any springs.

It’s 100% Washable

Outisde of safety, another selling point of the Newton mattress is that it’s 100% washable! As mentioned above, both fabric covers easily zip off and are machine washable. And the kicker … the actual mattress is washable too!

To wash the mattress, Newton recommends putting it in the shower (or bathtub) and either spot cleaning or washing the entire mattress with water (avoid hot water) and a mild detergent or vinegar. The mattress takes 2-6 hours to fully dry, so definitely keep that in mind when deciding when to clean it!

I LOVE the ease of cleaning the mattress!

Greenguard Gold Certified

The Newton mattress is Greenguard Gold Certified. What exactly does that mean? Greenguard Gold Certification is a voluntary third-party program that tests for over 10,000 chemicals and Volatile Organic Compounds. Products certified under this program bear the Greenguard Gold label. Newton’s Greenguard Gold certification means the mattress is tested and certified to have the lowest chemical emissions possible.

This is super important to me, especially in a mattress, where Weldon currently spends the majority of his days and nights!

Overall, we love the Newton mattress and have no complaints about it! It provides me with peace of mind as well. One less thing to worry about as a new mom. 🙂
